The Golden Ass
By Peter Oswald, based on the original by Apuleius
Shakespeare’s Globe (2002)
Directed by Tim Carroll
The elaborately decorated Globe stage was re-contextualised with the addition of garish fairground paintings into a fabulous Victorian side show.
Every conceivable kind of early 20th century popular entertainment, including silent film, circus, burlesque, the Lone Ranger, Ealing Studios and end-of-the-pier shows was pressed into the service of this joyous epic, full of wit and heart and spirit.
“A night of serious enchantment.] A riotous celebration of music hall and pantomime, funfairs and circuses, silent movies, westerns, puppetry and magic shows… Laura Hopkins’s witty designs suggest England in its Victorian and Edwardian heyday”
The Daily Telegraph
“Ebulliently inventive”
