Never Better

Devised by the company

National Youth Theatre (1995)

Directed by Dean Byfield

A depressed urban landscape of boarded-up shops, arcade games and massed floral tributes is home to a group of lost souls unsure whether they are alive or dead. They explore their condition by dancing, raging, checking pulses, inventing rituals, showing tenderness and raging some more.

Both the environment and their clothes are made up of colour-bled accumulated layers. As if they have evolved over ages, or as if they have attempted to re-imagine themselves over and over again.

“…compelling, risk-taking theatre from beginning to end, pointing to an intellectual and artistic vibrancy that is a tribute to the NYT.”
